The story of interest in this collection is Over The Green Mountains. Caldwell introduces the tale thus: It is good that every writer should at an early age provide himself with a plan. It has been my plan to jot down once a year the titles of ten or fifteen stories, and then every three or four weeks to write the story called for by each successive title on the list. I have found such a plan to be far less wearying than the old-fashioned hit-or-miss method of first writing the story and then trying to find, invent, or devise a suitable title for it..
The result of Caldwell's musing on this title is a story illustrating the lengths to which a smart Vermont farmer was prepared to go to secure his marriage to a delectable young lady, without any possibility of being liable for debts she may have run up before the wedding. This entails the bride being married out of her dress, but the farmer insists on complete nudity so there can be no argument. See the extract for a few more details.
While this yarn does deal with nudity in a social context, it isn't really about naturism, and doesn't say much about attitudes which relate directly to naturism. Even so, it is a nice little tale, and well told. That is true of the whole collection. I knew nothing of Caldwell until I was told about Lets Go Naked, and am pleased to have made his acquaintance. Jackpot is dedicated to Caldwell's wife, of whom I had heard, since she was Margaret Bourke White. Over The Green Mountains is also included in:
If anyone can supply an image of the dustjacket I would be very grateful.
