Charles Daney's Being and Nakedness site provides information about Alice Hastings Bradley Sheldon. Normally writing under the pen-name James Tiptree Jr, Alice Sheldon produced a significant number of highly-regarded science fiction stories. My first encounter with this author was the collection Ten Thousand Light Years From Home, which affected me strongly - the author has a delightful touch with essentially simple stories transformed by the imaginative palette and infinite canvas provided by SF's "what if?". The battered cover above shows how often I have returned to the collection. Sadly, I was less impressed by Crown Of Stars - you can't please all the readers all the time!
